Biography

Ravanbakhsh, Ghulam ‘Ali (1936-1980)

Vocalist performing ballads and popular lyrical songs (tarana). He was of Khurasani descent and made a name for himself in radio and television programmes in the early 1960s by performing lyrical songs tinted with Khurasani traditional melodies. He was one of the earliest Persian pop vocalists of the time who was invited to perform in the Gulha, largely based on his personal charisma and social charm. He performed lyrical songs with Khurasani folk melodies and lyrics in the Gulha-yi Sahra’i. A number of gramophone records were recorded in the years 1965-1972 on which he features as a vocalist. He ceased his musical activities from 1974 onwards Although his fame as a singer was not indebted to the Gulha, he made a name for himself by his performances on the radio and by playing roles in feature films.
