DESCRIPTION

Majalla-ye Musiqi (Music Magazine) is the first music magazine in Iran, which was published in 1939 under the management of Ghulam Husayn Min Bashiyan and by National Music Publications Department's, at the Ministry of Culture. In the first and second issues of this magazine, which were dedicated to the months of March and April, it is stated that the magazine was published by the order of His Imperial Majesty the Shah (Riza Shah) with the aim of introducing the public to modern music.

The first period of Music Magazine was published over three years from March 1939 to February 1942. After an eight-year hiatus, the second period began in February 1950 under the name “Nama-ye Musiqi”, edited by Rubik Gregorian, and remained active for a short period. In the first issue of Nama-ye Musiqi, Rubik Gregorian explained the reasons for the magazine's suspension.

The magazine featured Iranian music, biographies of musicians, history of music and musical instruments, sheet music, introductions to western classical music, and folk music (especially in Nama-ye Musiqi). Contributors to the magazine were Ruhu’llah Khaliqi, ‘Ali Naqi Vaziri, Muhit Tabataba’i, Parviz Natil Khanlari, Rubik Gregorian, Harpik Huvanisiyan, Husayn ‘Ali Mallah, M. Hashtrudi, Khusraw Varasteh, Husayn Nasihi, Puran Azudi, Amir Husayn Jahanbiglu, Parviz Mansuri, ‘Ali Quli I’itmad Muqaddam, Muhammad Mihdi Fuladvand, Parviz Mahmud, Mahmud Khushnam and Mihdi Barkashli. Heshmat Sanjari. ‘Abdu’l-Husayn Nushin and Mas‘ud Farzad contributed translations. The magazine included poetry, and translations of works by great playwrights like Shakespeare also.

The third period of Music Magazine, which was its longest publishing phase, began in September 1956 and included contributions from well-known figures like Mahmud Khushnam, Amir Ashraf Aryanpur, Sa‘id Khadiri and Zavin Hakupian (Z. Hakupian) who held the positions of editor and Chief Executive. In this third period, articles on the history of Iranian plays by Bahram Beyzaie were also featured. The magazine was issued monthly, bimonthly, and sometimes irregularly.
